104.5 or Oh it's just a virus.

So when you wake up on a quiet Saturday morning to find your daughter has a fever of 104.5 you have a couple of options:

1. Panic.
2. Call the Doctor.
3. Panic.

For the first hour we did 2 of those three options.  Our little girl is our first child and she's not quite 2 so we still don't really know what we're doing.  Panic seemed the best option at the time.  The last time she had a fever get up over 103 it was because of an ear infection and this time since she was already being treated for another ear infection, we knew something else must be going on.

What started as a very long day turned into a very long weekend and early part of the week.  Each morning we'd get up, sure the fever would have dissipated, and each morning we'd find that boiling heat coming off our little girl's body.  It was exhausting for all of us.  We spent all each day trying to get her to eat and drink, making sure to give her the proper dose of ibuprofen so she could fight the fever in moments of comfort.

Monday finally roles around and having not slept for two days I had to drag myself into work wondering whether this thing would ever clear.  The doctor told us to come in on Tuesday morning.  She'd woken up Tuesday with a fever of 103 degrees so I opted to take her in.  The from the doctor's office we were sent to the hospital for blood tests and a chest x-ray....Which is damn near impossible with a 2 yr old.

At the hospital, we had yogurt thrown all over the place, a very messy diaper change in a bathroom with no changing table, needles (I hate needles), blood, and radiation...All the while my daughter just kept asking for mommy and if she could go home.

This is not my child just an example of the device.
Let me tell you this, the joker who invented the contraption to secure toddlers in place for such x-rays should be forced to sit in one himself/herself.  It's a torture device.  My daughter was horrified by the clear plastic vise grip body holder and I was horrified that such a device even exists.

Anyway at the end of a very long day we learned one thing: the fever was done, it went away as quietly as it arrived and I had to put my daughter through the ringer for nothing.  We got home from the doctor's and both collapsed in exhaustion and relief...She slept for 3 hours and I just stared at the ceiling wondering what just happened in the last 5 days.

Bless her heart! My granddaughter is going through the exact same thing..been running fever for 4 days, treated for ear infection, and going for those tests this afternoon. I'm so glad your baby is feeling better. I hate it when they're so sick!
Thank you for stopping by my blog! I've really enjoyed reading yours. You remind me a lot of my older son...the love for his children is amazing!

Oh, there's nothing worse is there? And I know what you mean - my 18mth old had a mysterious lump appear in his skull, and had to have it x-rayed. The medieval clamping device to keep his head still was incredibly traumatic.
So glad the temp has gone finally anyway.

GEEEZ!! THAT IS HORRIBLE. GWEN MUST HAVE BEEN SCARED WITLESS! THE ONLY POSITIVE ABOUT IT IS THAT SHE WILL PROBABLY NOT REMEMBER THIS.

Sometimes the world of medicine seems like it's back in Medieval times. That inventor of that device should be shut in it for a 24-hour period, or maybe five days, the duration of your daughter's fever.

Sorry to hear your daughter had such an experience. I'm glad the fever has gone away. I hope all of you get the much needed rest you deserve.

The truth is you are lucky it was for nothing. And, from experience I can tell you that you did the right thing. Little kids tend to get high fevers but it is important to address them and get them down quickly. I had to rush my baby to the hospital with an equally high fever. She was dehydrated (badly) was put on IV and had to stay for the night. Thank goodness she was fine 24 hours later.

All this to let you know you did the right thing, and I am happy to hear it was nothing serious.

Nice to have met you on the blog hop.

that must have been so frightening for you all. What a brave little girl - I'm so glad she is feeling better now. It will take longer for you to get over the experience.

If you want some friendly advice...whenever a toddler has more than one ear infection, it's most likely due to dairy allergy...the most common food allergy. Look at your daughter's eyes and she if she has the typical circles under her eyes...known as allergy shiners. Or just take her off dairy for a week and see if she improves. Hope this helps ~ Kathie

I hope if you have a son you do NOT get him circumcised. It's totally unnecessary and it's cutting off part of the natural part of the penis. Looj up the word ''circumstraint'' and you will see the torture device.

I had to take my son to the ER back in November when he was only 10 months old and he was put into that torture device, not once but twice. The first time they said that a shadow appeared around his heart and they had to make sure it wasn't an enlarged heart. Come to find out it was just a shadow on the X-ray.

It is really sad and heart wrenching when your child gets sick. It sounds like you went through an ordeal from the moment you realized her fever to the hospital and the needles (do not get me started on needles).

your first three lines sounded like how I felt when I awoke to seeing my son have a night seizure for the first time. My forth line would have been BAWL.

All you have to do is stay strong and keep a smile an your face, because kids read emotions and feed off of them.

Following you from the hop.

Wow. It was a relief to read that she's okay. It really pays to have a good pediatrician to ensure the health of your one and only daughter. Fever is usually caused by an infection and is the body's form of defense against these bacteria. Yet children are always a delicate case even in something as simple as a fever. Yes, that x-ray contraption sure does look scary. Anyway, I'm glad that your daughter has finally recovered.
